Play Might Be Exactly What You Need Right Now

Apr 09, 2026

 Let’s be honest for a moment…

The world feels a bit heavy right now.

There’s a lot going on, a lot to process and a lot to carry.

And even if you’re someone who usually feels quite grounded… you might have noticed that things feel a little louder, a little more tiring, and so much harder to switch off from.

So if you’ve been feeling a bit off, a bit flat, or just not quite yourself… You’re not alone.

But here’s something gentle I want to offer you:

You don’t need to solve everything today - sometimes… you just need to play.

And just so this is said out loud…

It’s okay to choose moments of lightness… even when the world feels heavy. You don’t have to climb into the sadness with everyone else in order to care.

You’re allowed to step outside of it for a while.
To breathe.
To create.
To feel something a little softer.

That doesn’t make you disconnected, it makes you human.

Not productive play.
Not “I should make something good” play. I mean the kind of play where:

You pick up a brush without knowing what you’re going to paint.
You choose colours just because you like them.
You make marks that don’t have to mean anything.

The kind of play you probably haven’t let yourself have in quite a while.

Because somewhere along the way, a lot of us learned that creativity had to be:

  • good
  • useful
  • impressive
  • worth sharing

And if it wasn’t that… what was the point?

But to be honest - That’s where the magic got a bit lost.

Play is where your nervous system softens, it's where your thoughts quiet down just enough for you to breathe again.

It’s where you remember that not everything has to be serious… or fixed… or perfect.

So here are a few small ways you can bring a bit of play back into our lives (no pressure, just ideas):

1. Set a “no outcome” rule
Give yourself 10 minutes where nothing you make needs to be worth keeping. In fact… just assume it’ll be messy. That’s the whole point.

2. Use the “wrong” colours
Pick colours you wouldn’t normally choose. Let them clash. Let them surprise you.

3. Paint with something different
Your fingers, a sponge or the end of a brush. Take yourself off autopilot.

4. Make something just for you
Not for Instagram or Facebook - not to show anyone. Just because it feels nice to do.

And here’s the part I love the most…

When you let yourself play like this, something shifts. It's not always dramatic.

But quietly, you soften and you breathe differently.
You remember that there is still lightness… even in the middle of everything else.

And maybe your painting doesn’t turn out how you imagined.

Maybe it’s a bit chaotic and a bit weird. But maybe… it also feels a little bit like you.

And that’s more than enough.

So if today feels heavy… Don’t try to fix everything, Just pick up something… and play.

P.S. I believe so deeply in the power of play… it’s not just a “nice idea”, it’s something that genuinely changes how you feel.

So if you’re ready to explore that a little more, I’ve created an online course called Letting Go of the Outcome… which is, quite honestly, the ultimate way to play with paint.

And because this feels especially needed right now, you can take 25% off with the code PLAY.
