Losing Myself - How I Found My Way Back to Me

Jul 08, 2025

Have You Ever Looked in the Mirror and Not Recognized the Person Staring Back?

Let me take you back to 2001.

On paper, my life looked good. Great career. Loving husband. A stone-built house in the country. Yet, every morning, I’d wake up with this hollow feeling - like I was going through the motions of someone else’s life.

My days were a blur of work, takeout dinners, and zoning out in front of the TV. Weekends? Spent wandering the aisles of home improvement stores or the mall, buying things I didn’t actually need, trying to fill a void I really didn’t understand.

I felt like wallpaper in my own life - faded, unnoticed, just part of the background.

And the worst part? I had no idea who I really was anymore.

The Moment Everything Changed ....

At 38, I separated from my husband of 20 years, and to distract myself I signed up for an art class. Not because I thought I was talented, but because somewhere deep down, I remembered that as a kid, I loved making things.

That first class was messy. Awkward. And terrifying. But as I let myself play - just play - with colours and shapes, and something inside me woke up. In fact it was like I was set alight.

The art classes weren't about becoming an artist. They were about remembering myself.

Art became my lifeline. It helped me peel back layers of shoulds and supposed tos that had built up over decades. I started asking:

What do I actually enjoy?

What makes me feel alive?

Who was I before the world told me who to be?

Turns out, the woman underneath all that numbness was still there - creative, intuitive, and hungry for more.

The Unraveling (And Why It’s Necessary)

Here’s the hard truth: rediscovering yourself isn’t always pretty. It can be full of mistakes and snotty nosed, ugly crying.

On my journey back to me I had to face some uncomfortable questions:

Why was I working a job that drained me?

Why was I numbing out instead of living?

When did I stop believing I deserved joy?

I had to let go of old stories - that success meant sacrificing happiness, that my needs came last, that it was too late to change.

But here’s the magic: when you start honouring your truth, life rearranges itself to meet you where you are at.

Where You Start

If you’re feeling lost, disconnected, or like you’ve faded into the background of your life - I really get it.

Here’s what I know: your intuition hasn’t left you. It’s just been buried under years of routine, responsibility, and other people’s expectations.

So how do you begin?

Get Curious

What did you love as a child? (Hint: There’s a clue there.)

What makes time disappear when you do it?

Try Something Wildly Unfamiliar

Take a class. Dance. Garden. Write. Paint. It’s not about being “good” - it’s about feeling again.

Listen to That Tiny Voice

The one that whispers, “This doesn’t feel right anymore.” That’s your intuition knocking.

Let Go of the Timeline

Society tells women our best years are behind us after 50. Bullshit. Your most authentic, powerful years are ahead of you and you can start right now.

This Is Your Invitation

You don’t have to stay stuck. You don’t have to keep living a life that doesn’t feel like yours.

It starts with one small, brave step. Maybe today, it’s picking up a paintbrush. Or saying no to something that drains you. Or finally booking that trip you’ve been dreaming about.

The life you truly want? It’s not out of reach. It’s waiting for you to remember who you are.

And darling, that woman? She’s magnificent.

Ready to find her again? Let’s begin.....

P.S. If this resonated with you, leave a comment or send me a message. I’d love to hear your story
